Eger – Hollókő

Hollókő (90 km from Budapest), in the embracing arms of the Cserhát Hills, is a little Palóc village whose natural environment and richly adorned folk costumes earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1987. We take a walk of about an hour to see the protected original houses, built of adobe and roofed with tiles. Then we drive to Eger (1.5 hours from Hollókő), one of the oldest towns in Hungary, founded by King Saint Stephen in 1007. Eger is a colourful and enchanting city, full of Baroque architecture and grand buildings. We can visit the library of the Lyceum and the cathedral, the second largest church in the country. You have time for lunch (optional). Eger is famed not only for its history but also for its wine and thermal baths. The pedestrian town centre, with its brightly painted houses and iron balconies, has a lively atmosphere. Its medieval castle, famous for the battle of 1552 against the Turkish invaders, sits on a small hill overlooking the town and crowns the tour with its epic story. Return to Budapest.
